Chicago Artists Month Events

October is my favorite month of the year, in part because it is Chicago Artists Month. In 2006, the 11th annual month-long celebration of Chicago's dynamic arts community, presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, officially includes over 250 events at private and public venues throughout the city, two of which I am a part...

Another reason I love October is the celebration of another year of life. Yes, this year, my Open Studio Event will open on the day of my birth, October 6th. As always, this event offers a glimpse into my studio environment and the work that is currently occupying my mind, as well as opportunity to purchase works directly from their birthplace. I will have most of my panel, box and canvas paintings, as well as giclee prints, available at this event. If there are particular pieces that you would like to see, please reply to this email and I will be sure to have that work hanging in my studio.

I was inspired by the 2006 Chicago Artists Month theme, Beyond Boundaries, to expand the vision of my annual Open Studio Event. So in addition, I will be presenting a group show entitled Community Watch, featuring artwork from a select group of 10 local artists who I've met during my artistic endeavors and who I have featured on The Art Community section of my website. Please see the full exhibition invitation, and read a bit about each artist and how we met, or to link to their websites.

This event will kick off with an Opening Reception on Friday, October 6th from 6-10 PM and continue with an Open House on Saturday, October 7th from 2-10 PM, at my home, 2630 W Cortland (at Talman), in the West Bucktown Neighborhood.

A major annual event of Chicago Artists Month is the Chicago Artists' Coalition's Chicago Art Open. The Art Open is heralded as the largest exhibition of Chicago-area artists under one roof, featuring more than 300 artworks in every medium, genre, style and subject. Click here for a preview of the work that each artist will exhibit. This year's event was organized by Executive Director Olga Stefan, the CAC board and a crew of volunteers, including Community Watch artist Kim Hoffman, who designed the show card, catalog, and is one of 26 artists chosen for the Art Open's first ever Curator's Choice exhibition.

The Art Open is being held this year at the spacious Zhou B Center at 1029 W 35th St in the Bridgeport Neighborhood. An Opening Benefit will be held on Friday, October 20 from 6-11 PM, with music by Sam Saunders at 6, Chicago Udu Calls at 7, Graymail (featuring my partner and web designer, Andrew Tibbetts, and Community Watch artist Andy Doyle) at 8 and DJ Madrid at 9. Tickets are $20 at the door. Parking is available in the rear, accessible from the east side of the buildig. The Zhou B Center houses several galleries and artist's studios that will also be hosting opening receptions on the 20th, as they do the 3rd Friday of each month.

The Art Open will be open daily from 11-5 PM from October 17th through November 4th, with a $5 suggestion donation. Tours, panel discussions, a Family Day and more are also on the schedule. See the full exhibition invitation or the Chicago Artist Coalitiion website for further details.
